Made a civil parish in 1894, under the 'Local Government Act, 1894' (it had been an ecclesiastical parish since 1843) out of the civil parish of Whippingham. |
From 1859 the town had been governed by a Local Board of Health until the 1894 Act established an Urban District Council. |
The church of St. James was designed by Mr. Nash, the foundation stone was laid by Queen Victoria, then Princess in September 1831, it was consecrated in 1833 and enlarged in 1868 and 1870. |
There is a Congregational chapel, built in 1829 and seating 250 |
There are Wesleyan and United Methodist chapels. |
The cemetery of 4 acres was formed in 1877, the ground being given by Queen Victoria ; it was laid out at a cost of 1,200GBP and is under the control of the Urban Council. |
In Connaught road is a Catholic church dedicated to St. David, for East Cowes and the Royal Naval College, Osborne House. |
In York avenue is the Abbey of St. Michael, a convent for Benedictine nuns. |
In December 1902, Messrs. Arthur and William James placed the Frank James Memorial Home and its contents for a probationary period of two years at the disposal of H.R.H. Princess Henry of Battenberg, for a cottage hospital for Cowes, East Cowes, Whippingham and Northwood - the gift has now been made absolute, and in future would be known as the Frank James Memorial Home (Cottage Hospital). |
The Frank James Memorial Seamen's Home was opened in 1894, for the reception of aged seamem of the mercantile and yacht marine. |
The Recreation Ground, in the Park, consists of 4 acres presented to the town, January 1887, by the late Viscount Gort, and is provided with gymnastic apparatus of various kinds. |
The late Queen Victoria presented a recreation ground and road in July 1898, in exchange for a road surrendered by the Council. |
