   Newport Grammar School, Lower St. James street - founded by subscription in 1614 and endowed by Sir Richard Worsley, Sir Thomas Fleming and others. The master teaches 20 free scholars and is allowed to take other day scholars as well as boarders. Vibert Charles D. B.A., head master

   Council (boys', girls, & infants' in three departments) Upper St. James street & Orchard street; built 1812 originally known as the Lancastrian and afterwards the Royal British Schools, were handed to the Newport Board in 1875; re-opened in Jan. 1876 and a handsome new infants' school-room has been added at a cost of about 1200GBP, with new class rooms to the older buildings & other additions & improvements; the school will hold 900 children; average attendance 700.
